If you’re looking for a simple improvement you can perform in your home, it may be a smart choice to start by replacing your garage door springs. This is not something many people think about when planning changes to their home, but it can be a smart choice. Of course, this is one of those improvements to your home that you won’t notice when you look around, but when you are opening and closing your garage door every day you’ll appreciate how much easier it is.
Many people don’t realize that garage doors are actually very heavy, and it is only possible to open them so simply because of the spring which helps to lift it up, and slows it down when it is being lowered. If you’re finding that your garage door is getting more and more difficult to open, or that it slams shut when you’re closing it, you likely need a new garage door spring.
You can get springs of different strengths to make your door lighter or heavier depending on your needs. IF you’ve got an automatic garage door, you still need to have a working spring. A new spring can extend the life and functionality of an electric garage door opener since it will reduce the stress put on the motor every time you open or close the door.
Replacing garage door springs is not very difficult, but if you’ve never done it before it can be slightly dangerous so make sure to follow the instructions. When installing the spring it needs to be twisted to increase the tension, which will help with the raising and lowering of the door. If you add too much tension, or accidently drop the spring while adding the tension it can snap back and cause serious injury.
With this in mind many people will want to hire someone to come out and replace the spring for them. This is a good idea since it is a fairly quick job for those who have done it before so it won’t cost too much money, and you can rest assured that it is installed correctly. Most general contractors will be able to install your garage door springs quickly and easily for you.
IF your garage door has an old spring on it, you could have a big safety hazard on your hands. While it doesn’t happen often, if a garage door spring snaps loose or breaks it can cause the door to drop very quickly. It there is a person in the area they can be very seriously injured or even killed. A car that is pulling in or out of the garage at the time will experience major damage as well.
Rather than putting yourself and your property at risk, make the minor investment to replace your garage door spring. It is an inexpensive job, and can be completed in very little time. You can then enjoy the fact that you’ve got a new and reliable spring for years to come.
